Frozen ripe bananas make thick, tasty smoothies, but they can also trigger symptoms in people with IBS. Is it possible to make an equally thick and creamy vegan smoothie without ripe bananas?

The answer is a resounding yes. The secret? Use low-FODMAP frozen fruit and a few other key ingredients instead of ripe bananas, and you'll be on your way to smoothie heaven instantly. Here's one version to get you started. If you'd like to see more smoothie recipes like this in the future, please let me know in the comment section below.

FROSTY NO-BANANA STRAWBERRY SMOOTHIE
Makes 1 serving

1 cup vanilla almond milk, or 1/4 cup low-FODMAP vegan yogurt plus 1 cup water
1 cup frozen whole strawberries (about 10 strawberries)
1/4 cup frozen pineapple chunks (optional)
2 tablespoons quick-cooking rolled oats
4 teaspoons pure maple syrup
2 teaspoons almond butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional; omit if using vanilla almond milk or flavored yogurt)

Put all the ingredients in a high-powered blender and process until smooth. Pour into a tall glass and serve at once.

Chocophile Bonus: After blending, add 1 heaping tablespoon of dark chocolate chunks and pulse until they're finely chopped but not blended.
